How to aim the Cycle of Aimlessness

A guide to set your goals more efficiently.

Today I was talking with a friend about time management, after he said that he neither keeps a todo list nor otherwise plans his daily life and tasks apart from a calendar. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I just wonder how few people think about time management.

According to a Harvard study, people with clear goals earn on average three times as much as the comparison group. And the reason why aimlessness harms us is relatively simple. The Cycle of Aimlessness describes the downward spiral of aimlessness in 5 steps:

If you don’t have clear goals in mind, this leads to aimlessness in everyday life. This leads in the further step to missing success results, which should motivate you. The lack of motivation results in feelings of inferiority. Because of this you are less motivated to create something. This paralysis of creativity leads to aimlessness in your life.

Setting yourself small, achievable goals every day can help you to get out of this spiral and to have a sense of achievement again. This can increase your self-esteem in the long run, so that you can go through life with a sense of purpose again. The goals should be strenuous, but doable.
One reason why many people walk through life without a plan is that they were taught otherwise in the past.

It always comes differently than one thinks.

But this fact depends on how high you set your goals. You should consider two basic criteria:

1. your goals are measurable.

Measurable means: What and how much of it do I want to accomplish? By when will I have it done? And why am I doing the task?

2. your goals are feasible.

As already mentioned, it is important not to set goals that are too high. For feasibility it is also important to formulate goals in a positive way.
All goals should also be set in writing to create more transparency.

Now it’s up to you. Apply the newly acquired knowledge to yourself and answer the following questions:
What do I want to achieve in life?
What dreams and wishes do I have?
What do I still want to achieve this year?
